Employing disabled people and people with health conditions

Local Councils can offer fulfilling roles to those with disabilities and health conditions.  The opportunities can be flexible and provide an avenue for those looking for the chance to put their skills and experience to good use for the benefit of the community. Many disabilities and long-term health conditions are unseen and are not acknowledged.

Reasonable adjustments can be made if an employee or volunteer has a disability or long-term health condition to comply with Equality Act duties applying to an employer.

As a local council you may wish to demonstrate your willingness to recruit and support those who may be disabled using the Disability Confident scheme available through the Department for Work and Pensions.  There are three levels that employers can sign up to; ‘Committed’, ‘Employer’, and ‘Leader’.

The Disability Confident scheme supports employers to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to your workplace.  Disability Confident employers of all sizes are:

·       challenging attitudes towards disability

·       increasing understanding of disability

·       removing barriers to disabled people and those with long-term health conditions

·       ensuring that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations

Being Disability Confident could help you discover someone your council or business  just can’t do without.  You may find that you already comply with the Disability Confident  ‘Committed’ and/or ‘Employer’ categories through what you already do.
